User can receive emails but cannot send emails

Hi everyone,

perhaps this is a simple question for you: I am using Exchange Server 5.5
SP4 and WinNT4 SP6. A newly generated user automatically gets the email
address user@****. So far, so good. The user can receive emails but cannot
send emails. Any ideas?
