Hi Ripon, Your post was very useful and provided an easy way to "see" disk space gain you'd get with off line defrag. I'll add this to our regular server review/audit. As new admins, we got jumpy on the point of off line defrag as our first attempts at it failed after 12+ hours on one of our primary mailbox stores. After reducing mailbox sizes, we were able to defrag this mbs. Thanks, Robert ________________________________ From: Ripon Bahl [mailto:ripon.bahl@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Sat 5/7/2005 1:21 AM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: Soka|Defag|Frequency http://www.MSExchange.org/ Hi I have been observing this mail thread from last three days. I would like to clear few points on Offline defrag. On daily basis exchange perform online defrag which manage the database to some extent but cannot release free whilte space. In order to release that white space you need to perform offline defragment. Now the question arises is when to do it. Well the best way to judge is to check for event id 1221 in the Exchange server application log which will give clear picture of white space in both private and public database. Based on that value you can do a planning of offline defragment. Hope this would clarify. Absolutely not. ________________________________ From: Pete Hartman [mailto:pdch@xxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, May 04, 2005 11:46 AM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: Soka|Defag|Frequency http://www.MSExchange.org/ What if one archives a couple of gig of email. Is it necessary to do an off-line defrag? Thanks! ________________________________ From: Michael B. An Exchange administrator should be aware of that limit, and should plan for it. If your organization needs more than 16 GB of mailbox storage - then you should buy it. Not defrag the database. ________________________________ From: P. I know because mine crashed. We purchased PerfectDisk 7 for Exchange, which enables scheduling of offline defrags. P.
