Solved. Something was screwy with the Exchange installation so I made
sure that there were no mailboxes on that server and then blew it away
before reinstalling it.

Problem solved; all I have to do is to work out how to reply to the
messages.

Has anyone any tips on doing this correctly? I think that I have done
it right but, quite obviously, I have not.

I have a bridgehead server which seems to pull the newsgroups down (I am
only looking at half a dozen as so not to choke the test server) into a
folder onto another server's drive.

If I look into this folder then I can see the .nws files appearing.
The trick is now to get these .nws files into the 'Internet Newsgroups'
public folder. This is the bit where I am having problems.

Any suggestions as I am going around in circles and can't make the
(obvious) connection?
