I only wish that was true. If you're the admin, then you must lock it. I
mean, what admin doesn't log onto the servers the administer??? If I find an
admin not ever logging onto a server, then why have I hired them??

References aside, security has to be balanced with practicality. In a large
organization, it would be ridiculous to require locking servers for anything
other than temporary period of time.

Please provide references to "always lock a server..." Microsoft references
would be great. FIPS references would be good too.

Thanks,
Michael

I hate to disagree with you, but I couldn't disagree more. In fact, the
Federal Government couldn't disagree with you more.

Security is the top reason. Always lock a server so it can't be logged into
in case it's compromised.

I have to beg to differ with you on John. I go back a long ways on this list
and John has made so many wrong statements, etc., especially to newbie's,
that it speaks for itself.

However, I realize as with all techs, there are varied opinions. I just have
had a rough time over the years with "consultants." I've known many, too
many. Only 1 or 2 knew their salt, (including you.)

Thank you for the kind words Jared, however I have met and communicated with
many great consultants in my time, John being one of them.

My advise to everyone is to logout of your servers, the only time I lock a
server is if I am working on it and need to step away for a minute, why did
the auditors chew you a new hole for logging out of the server?

Mark

John, you've confused a workstation with a server. Darn consultants.
I've
never met a knowledgeable consultant!! (Except Mark of course, but that's
rare.)

True, absolutely. When leaving a computer for a short period of time, lock.
The question is whether to leave locked always, or when leaving for an
extended period of time, log off.
