Isn't server1 your FE server? If so, then shortname likely won't work if
configured. Try again with http://fqdn/exchange and see what you get. (FQDN
of the server's public name as if from the internet, right?)
If the FE can't talk to the BE server, you will get errors. The FE server
gets it's data from the BE server.

Have you confirmed that the FE server is listening on port 80? What happens
when you browse to \\server1\exchange from server1?

I can telnet and verify from the front end to the back end on 80, 25, 691,
389, 3268, 88, 53, 135 and 1024 and above.
Therefore, it makes me believe it's a configuration problem on the FE
server.
Have I stumped ya?

If you're unable to get to it using the IP address or name, then it's likely
a firewall configuration issue. As Al mentioned there's probably a necessary
port being blocked.
