SMTP Authority attack

Hello.
My name is António and I have added two messages explaining some problems
that I am having in my Exchange 2000.
Related to this matter I want to run some tests.
One of them is to try to get an SMTP authentication and try to access from
outside of my business network.
Is it to hard to do something like this. What knowledge do I have to get
before even trying to do something like this?
Are there tools to do so?
