Hi Shoeb,
Are you planning to add the Exchange 2003 server to your existing
Exchange 2000 organization an upgrade? If so, you can simply start
moving mailboxes using ADUC. If you are planning to build a fresh
Exchange 2003 server and organization, and want to restore the Mailbox
store from a tape backup, you can still do it, but you need to make some
changes to your Exchange organization schema first. And Microsoft does
not recommend doing these changes in a production server, and are
recommended only for a restore server or lab server. Once you get the
new Exchange 2003 sever installed in a new organization, you need to
rename the Administrative Group name to match the original
Administrative Group name from the previous server. Secondly, your
organization name has to match. And third, the legacyDN attribute of
your new Exchange 2003 organization has to be identical to the previous
Exchange organization. So, if you don't have these attribute values
handy, then you cannot restore the database. You can download the
utility called legacydn.exe from Microsoft, and use that tool to rename
these attributes in your new Organization. This tool should also be
found in the Exchange media CD, and Service pack downloads. Remember,
these changes are recommended only in lab environment. If you plan to do
this for a production environment, the best thing to do will be to build
a separate restore server, in a separate AD environment, and restore the
database there, and then use Exmerge to move the mailboxes using PST
files to the new server.
