Yeah, big folders can cause pain, although it would really be just the initial sync, after that, unless huge changes take place on a daily basis, the sync traffic would be relatively small. Now, then, onto my soapbox - if you have PFs with 3 GIGs PLUS of data in each, maybe a public folder isn't the right mechanism for that storage? A SharePoint repository would probably be a better solution, or an FTP site if those are just really big files.
