Sendmail is a swiss cheese when it comes to security and it is horrible to
configure and maintain. Try Postfix, it's my personal favorite ;)
Also, you can use amavisd-new for anti-virus, which runs as an SMTP service and
it's very easy to implement on postfix. www.ijs.si/software/amavisd
Don't leave the unix box defenseless (i.e.: outside the firewall). i'd avise
you to either:
1- put it on a DMZ
2- change the rule on your pix so that when inbound SMTP traffic comes to your
PIX, it redirects that requisition to the UNIX box.

I figured as much that this is what i am required to do, but how do i
configure exchange to forward all mails to a smart host?
i plan to use sendmail on a unix box, is this advisable?
