Queued mail on Exchange 5.5 server

Hello all,
 
   Running Win2K SP3 with Exchange 5.5.
 
   I just looked at the Outbound Queues for our Internet Mail Service (IMC)
in exchange 5.5.  There are over 600 e-mails in queue to be sent and over
590 of them say that they are originating from '<>' .  What does this '<>'
mean?  All originating e-mail should be from 'any_user@xxxxxxxxxxxx'
<mailto:'any_user@xxxxxxxxxxxx'> .  I have relaying locked down to only pc's
on my domain.  Where are these coming from.
