POP3 in Exchange 2003

We have just migrated from Novell GroupWise 6.0 to Exchange 2003 and I am
running into an issue that did not experience with GroupWise. Why is it that
everytime I am downloading my emails using a POP3 client, those messages become
read/opened? Is there a setting that I am missing or is this how POP3 in
Exhange 2003 is supposed to wok?
I couldn't find anything on Microsoft page and I am wondering if any of you can
illuminate this issue.
