I was just about to recommend the same :)

I've had this phenonemon a couple of times, it was almost everytime
connected to hardware issues, i.e. changing the keyboard OR refreshing
the mainboard drivers did the trick.

Most probably you can switch back to "normal" operation by hitting some
of the control keys sequentially, which is a bit of help but not a real
solution.
