OT: Am I Opening a Relay?

I have Exchange 2003 (via SBS) installed on a server that is also running
Veritas Backup Exec 10. We are not currently using Exchange (for political
reasons), but I would like to use it to send the backup notifications from
Backup Exec. I believe the simplest way to do this is to just use the SMTP
to send the notices my account at user@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I have tested this via telnet but get a message: “550 5.7.1 Unable to relay
for publicdomain.com”

Where can I allow this? (I am a bit confused since I thought I was sending
to that domain, not relaying for it.)
