But I'm not using a third party application - I'm using Windows 2000
Exchange-enhanced "ntbackup.exe".

You're correct Gene.... If you are using 3rd party
software like Veritas you can backup all your exchange
database and mailbox w/o stopping the services. You
can do it by adding the Open File Option on your
exchange server. And it will backup all the selected
open files.
