Switching to native mode is within Active Directory so I'm at a stale mate I need to get the user accounts migrated over but I can't use ADMT until I'm in Native mode. Am I wrong about the 5.5 and Exchange Mix needing to stay in Mixed mode? My exchange setup is one org and two SMTP connectors on the Exchange 2000 box's all is working fine. It's just getting past this dilemma. I will go back and re-look the migration docs again. Just a side note my predecessor all ready used the disabled accounts for one of the domains. So far no problems and it's been months since this the change. I need follow MS recommendations for changing permissions on them. Confused as to why not, but either way, I think that migration tools aren't the problem. It's the process that needs to be defined and then a tool set selected. Have you seen the Microsoft migration docs? I think there are some pretty good planning portions in there that should be helpful in getting the plan situated before doing anything else. What I have is five different locations. In NT they were all there own Domain and I had trusts between them all. The W2K domain was built up as a new domain. The goal is to just move all the users and resources over to this new domain. So now I'll end up with just one domain. I have limited resources so I was moving one location at a time. Basically moving hardware around as I went. Three of the locations will have only one server so this will house both DC and Exchange. Not pretty but this is what I have to work with right now. The other two locations have a separate Exchange box. All locations are connected with either T1 lines or 1.5 MB VPN's. My user base (Users and Mailboxes) is only around 100. As far as Migration tools will third party tools able me to move users from a mixed mode? I fear since I have exchange on a DC I would not be able to move to native mode, Correct? Thanks for the help Rich -----Original Message----- From: Mulnick, Al [mailto:Al.Mulnick@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, May 24, 2004 3:49 PM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: NT to W2K and Exchange Migration problem http://www.MSExchange.org/ Unfortunately the answer depends. My usual preference is to migrate the Windows first and then work on the Exchange mailboxes. You're in the exact opposite my preference :) You really really really don't want to use the disabled accounts for anything. Besides, what good are they to you? You still have 5.5 mailboxes in use so you're right, you can't yet go to native Exchange mode. Is W2K native? I assume so, but... What's the topology of Windows domains? Are they separate? What were your thoughts on the Exchange migration tools? You can do a migration where you create two objects and then merge them back together. Have you considered this method? There's a lot more to this than I currently mention. Some background and topology would be useful to be more helpful. Also, what size network are we talking about? How many mailboxes/users etc? I currently have a new W2K Active Directory Domain have 5 NT Domains that I am moving into a single New W2K Active Directory Domain. The Migration also includes Exchange 5.5 Servers and E2K servers in the same Org. The E2K Servers are sitting in the W2K domain with the goal to migrate all the users and public folders to the new E2K Box's and then removing the 5.5 boxes all together. After the W2K domain was setup the Exchange migration process started first. The ADC was run and disabled user accounts were created in the W2K domain creating place holders for the Exchange Mailboxes. Since I still have 5.5 Exchange Boxes in use I can't switch to Native mode, which means I can't use the ADMTv2 to migrate the users to the new domain. While I can survive with out the Sid History of the User accounts I can't lose the access to the Exchange mailboxes. I read the MS Articles on the problems activating the Disabled accounts. As I move users to W2K I am also Moving their mail boxes to E2K. My Questions are: 1. If I use the Disabled accounts with the intention of removing all The 5.5 box's will I have any trouble. 2. With the Requirements for migrating the 5.5 user accounts to E2K what is the best approach to do this and tie them to a new W2K user account I've been given the task of finishing this Migration an am stuck with what I have an need to find a way to make this work...Any Help / recommendations would be appreciated ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Exchange Newsletters: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/newsletter.asp Exchange FAQ: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/larticle.asp?type=FAQ ------------------------------------------------------ Other Internet Software Marketing Sites: Leading Network Software Directory: http://www.serverfiles.com No.1 ISA Server Resource Site: http://www.isaserver.org Windows Security Resource Site: http://www.windowsecurity.com/ Network Security Library: http://www.secinf.net/ Windows 2000/NT Fax Solutions: http://www.ntfaxfaq.com ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Exchange Newsletters: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/newsletter.asp Exchange FAQ: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/larticle.asp?type=FAQ ------------------------------------------------------ Other Internet Software Marketing Sites: Leading Network Software Directory: http://www.serverfiles.com No.1 ISA Server Resource Site: http://www.isaserver.org Windows Security Resource Site: http://www.windowsecurity.com/ Network Security Library: http://www.secinf.net/ Windows 2000/NT Fax Solutions: http://www.ntfaxfaq.com ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Exchange Newsletters: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/newsletter.asp Exchange FAQ: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/larticle.asp?type=FAQ ------------------------------------------------------ Other Internet Software Marketing Sites: Leading Network Software Directory: http://www.serverfiles.com No.1 ISA Server Resource Site: http://www.isaserver.org Windows Security Resource Site: http://www.windowsecurity.com/ Network Security Library: http://www.secinf.net/ Windows 2000/NT Fax Solutions: http://www.ntfaxfaq.com ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Exchange Newsletters: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/newsletter.asp Exchange FAQ: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/larticle.asp?type=FAQ ------------------------------------------------------ Other Internet Software Marketing Sites: Leading Network Software Directory: http://www.serverfiles.com No.1 ISA Server Resource Site: http://www.isaserver.org Windows Security Resource Site: http://www.windowsecurity.com/ Network Security Library: http://www.secinf.net/ Windows 2000/NT Fax Solutions: http://www.ntfaxfaq.com ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Exchange Newsletters: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/newsletter.asp Exchange FAQ: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/larticle.asp?type=FAQ ------------------------------------------------------ Other Internet Software Marketing Sites: Leading Network Software Directory: http://www.serverfiles.com No.1 ISA Server Resource Site: http://www.isaserver.org Windows Security Resource Site: http://www.windowsecurity.com/ Network Security Library: http://www.secinf.net/ Windows 2000/NT Fax Solutions: http://www.ntfaxfaq.com ------------------------------------------------------
