I ask because that's the enterprise edition. Is the full enterprise edition
required if you're only wanting Exchange in a multi-forest implementation?
That wouldn't make a lot of sense now would it? Shouldn't there be a
separate sku for just Exchange deployments?

Its not part of Exchange 2003 and was never planned to be part of Exchange
2003, it is a Directory Service feature not a messaging feature, the MIIS
Feature Pack is available as a free download for Windows 2003.

Like I said, various levels of functionality. You pick what you need, but
you won't get the full functionality. Also, I suspect that you don't need
the entire enterprise edition of MIIS. You may only need a subset for your
Exchange implementation. There was talk that it would be included when you
purchase Exchange 2003 but I never followed through to see if that happened.
Worth checking as it may save you a buck or two.

You need Windows 2003 to run MIIS Feature Pack, you will also need SQL as
the MetaDirectory, but you can use it with two Exchange 2000 or Exchange
2003 orgs.
The full version of MIIS would allow you to sync other directory services,
such as PeopleSoft, Iplant, NDS etc with AD.

No this is not the case, but you can use the MIIS Feature Pack that is a
free download from Microsoft to sync the two organizations, there is no MMS
anymore its MIIS :-)

Apologies for the interruption.
Do I understand this correctly? If you are running Windows 2003 and Exchange
2003 in two Domain forests then the act of simply setting up a trust allows
for full GAL replication between them? Would this not make the MS Meta
Directory Service largely, if not totally, redundant?

Upgrade to Exchange 2003 would be the easiest path. It's a tested
configuration up to (last I heard) 5 forest scenarios. Really helps if the
client is Outlook 2003 and can use Kerb auth. Otherwise, you'll have issues
trying to integrate multiple forests but could conceivably do it with MMS
3.0. That's not that expensive in the Exchange 2003 timeframe as I
understand pricing to be.
