According to email RFC's, Message-ID is a required header.

It's also used for grouping by conversation (Outlook term).

I wouldn't remove it.

Subject: [exchangelist] Message-ID Header - is it essential for proper
email flow?

Is the Message-ID header created by Exchange (using 2003 here) of any
importance for proper mail flow? I have a way to remove it at our mail
gateway for outbound (to external email addresses) emails.

This one:

Message-ID: <randomnumbersandletters@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Thank you,
