Maximum delivery time

Hi All,
We have Exchange server 5.5 SP4 working on Windows NT 4.0 SP6a. The problem
when a user send a message and it fail to delivered to the destination, the
message is held in the server from 2 to 3 days and a non delivered message
is returned to the user. Is there any way to reduce the trial time to only
one hour? And reply to the user the message in not delivered.
