You Need to move mail boxes and they can be done 2 way, One is using
utility and other is to go to all the user and changing the storage in
AD under exchange feature. Hope this helps ..

Thanks, you are pretty smart at Exchange.
So to be clear, this is what I have to do to move Exchange off my root
DC to new server (Member Server)
- Backup everything
- Install Windows on the new server as a member of the domain.
- Install Exchange 2000 on this server.
- Replicate all system/public folders
- Install the third party software such as GFI, NAV for Exchange
- When clients connect they will be automatically transferred to new
server because system/public folders are moved
- Remove Exchange from original server
- Remove Third Party software
Voila! Done. The original server will still be the functioning root DC,
DNS, DHCP server
OH - Will also have a Blackberry server how will that react and also
OWA?

No you do not have to touch the clients.
As I stated - as long as both Exchange servers are available when the
clients connect for the first time after the move, they will be
automatically redirected. No user or administration intervention
required. The key thing is to use the Move Mailbox wizard and ensure
that both servers are available. Exchange and Active Directory does the
rest.
For your DNS/MX records that depends. If you are behind a NAT firewall,
then simply redirect the NAT. you can do that at any point - although I
tend to do it when more than half the inbound traffic has to be
redirected.

You want to do a swing migration.
With careful planning it can be done with zero downtime to the users.
A real rough outline of the process:
Install Windows 2000 in the usual way with a unique name and add it to
your existing domain.
Install Exchange 2000 from the CD. It will join the existing Exchange
organisation.
Setup replication of public and system folders. For system folders,
basically follow the steps in this article up to but excluding removing
the existing Exchange server.

Then use the "Move Mailbox" wizard to move the mailboxes across.
As long as both servers are available when the clients connect for the
first time, they will be automatically redirected.
Once everyone has redirected, remove the replicas of the public and
system folders - basically follow the article above to remove Exchange
correctly.
If you know your way around Exchange then I have an article on my web
site at http://www.amset.info/exchange/migration.asp which goes in to it
in more depth. However it does not tell you how to do each stage in baby
steps, it presumes that you know how to configure replicas and other
tasks within Exchange.

Hi all,
This may be lengthy but I want to make sure I do not miss anything.
We currently have Exchange 2000 running on our root domain controller.
There is a request to install Exchange on a new server. Here is our
setup:
CURRENT SETUP:
- Exchange 2000 (SP2) running on root domain controller which has DNS,
DHCP installed
- GFI Mail Essentials installed
- NAV for exchange installed
- Exchange server behind ISA 2000 which publishes OWA
WHAT WE WANT TO DO:
- Move Exchange 2000 to new server + GFI + NAV with the least amount of
impact to Active Directory and Outlook client.
What is the best approach? I am trying to do the planning for this and
want to have all possibilities and eliminate as many head aches as
possible.
