IMAP logon fails when there is a space in the logon

One of my users insisted on a logon like this: "firstname lastname".
The logon "firstname lastname" fonctions over Exchange but the login
"firstname lastname@xxxxxxxxxxxx" does not with IMAP.
She would like to enable IMAP at her house, as she thinks her slow
connection will not work with Exchange,
I tried replacing the space with %20 it does not work.
What do you suggest?
