They both provide transportation but both have different purposes and designs. IMAP is for reading/retrieving e-mail. SMTP is for sending e-mail from client and sending/receiving e-mail between e-mail servers. Sorry to say this, but if one is asking a question like that, one needs to step away from the Exchange server!
