Hi 
you can use OWA with HTTPS protocol to allow for web access anywhere
including behind a firewall (except if theat company has blocked either
protocol, which is rare). Just need to enable by setting up certificate
services (windows can do it for free) or purchase a certificate from
verisign or other. 
Once that is doen set protocol for https and provide address to
employees. 
That is about the easiest way to do it as you are dealing with too many
different networks.

Why not use OWA or wait for Exchange 2003 and deploy Windows 2003 with 
Exchange 2003 and then use RPC over HTTP.

The other option is to use Outlook Express and configure it to connect
to 
the Exchange server via HTTP (WebDAV), but this would not give you all
the 
features of Outlook (MAPI) or OWA such as Calendar etc
