If you move mailboxes within site you don't need exmerge. Exmerge
utility is needed only if you move mailboxes from site A to site B ( not
from server to server)

Adding the new server to the site will allow you to move the mailboxes
from server "A" to server "B". There is a utility called "exmerge.exe"
that is available from MS. This will create a PST from the existing
mailboxes and migrate the data if you chose. It also allows you to
store the PST on a network location - handy if your old server has
limited space.

If you use the "Move Mailbox" utility it sometimes makes the mailbox
appear to be empty. See Q2162998 for notes on how to handle this issue.
As always, make sure you have a working backup before moving the data -
sometimes the data can get lost in the process.

The EXMERGE can handle multiple boxes at one time.

Hope that helps.

Subject: [exchangelist] Help!

I have an Exchange Server site running now. I want to replace the
server with a new one but with very little down time. I started
installing exchange 5.5 on the new server and it asks if I want to join
an existing site or create a new one. Can I join the existing site, if
so what happens when you do so, does it take all of the user's mail
boxes, and transfers them to the new server or does the new server act
as a backup. What will happen when I take the primary server offline,
does the new server take over.

Any help or guidance appreciated, I aml trying to limit the suprises.
