Andrew, Most of these issues seem to be addressed in Event ID. Have a look there. You would need a lot of Patience to see this thru. You might want to take a backup of your DB before serious corruption occurs. My Take on this is as long as you got a good clean DB and all the settings of your Exchange server, you can always recover your server, even if it means rebuilding the box. Just stay calm, and review the links from MS and suggestions from Event Id. I have found them very useful in the past. The servers are a huge mess but I am slowly getting things back on track. This company sells uses vehicles to people or other dealers (haven?t figured it out yet) through Blackberry technology. Anyhow their Exchange 2003 sits on Windows 2003 Server which is setup as a DC, it also run IMAP, and OWA. The key issue right now is when the server starts up, it runs into trouble and most times stopping Information Store, MTA and System Attendant.
