Give him a break? A break from what? 

If I posted a question to the list for every error message I see in the
event log without first trying to find it on my own, I would be asking those
kinds of questions a couple of times per week.

Yes, this forum is to help one another. The key word is help, not hold you
by the hand and tell you want to do. 

In school, the teacher (at least the good ones) teaches you how to learn,
not give you the answers.

Like the old saying: Give a hungry man food, he will be hungry again
tomorrow. Teach him how to fish, he will eat every day.
