My Disaster Recovery plan -
I have a separate server that is off that network - Same name, service pack,
hot fixes, etc. When I update my Exchange server, I also update my recovery
server. If you want to recover you have to build and identical (software)
box to recover to. I use my recovery server to recover single mailboxes if
necessary. That way I don't have to disturb my production server to restore
a mailbox that was accidentally deleted six months ago.

You are both correct, the question becomes what backup software are you
using? I have recovered many Exchange 2000 servers from Veritas Backup
Exec with no problems. I have had to make the $80 support call to
Veritas to get information and a bit of help on their software but the
recoveries have been flawless.

Documenting the Exchange server is so very important, i.e. Service
packs, Hot Fixes etc...

Hi All,

Quick Question. We are running Exchange 2000. My Boss and I disagree
on a point. He says he heard that if our Exchange Server would
completely "bite the dust".... as in, be destroyed or maybe even just
the Hard Drive go south... that we could recover by just bringing in
another computer running Windows 2000 Server and restoring all the
appropriate files from our backups. I say we would have to build
another Exchange Server by installing Exchange 2000 and then configuring
it. We then could recover our mailboxes etc. from the backup files.

Who is correct?
What files SHOULD I be backing up?
Are there existing articles on the best way to back up Exchange.
Should I be running some sort of "mirror" drive?
How are y'all handling "disaster recovery" for Exchange?

Thanks in advance,
Kelli Irwin
