Hmm.. Hard to say.  I know *originally* that wasn't the case because of IIS.
The expected upgrade path is to upgrade to E2K3 and then upgrade the OS.  

Regardless, I do think that the recovery scenario is enough to make me
cringe and run away screaming in the first place :)

While that's true, I seem to recall you can do an in-place upgrade of your
OS underneath Ex2K - so it will RUN on a Win2K3 server, just won't install
(the recovery scenarios are of course frightening).
