Since you cannot change the Exchange 5.5 SMTP banner, you will need to
explore the following options:

1) Install a Windows Server (preferably 2003) and setup IIS SMTP as
the Internet accessible SMTP gateway for your 5.5 server.  After the
server has been patched behind a firewall, I would recommend placing
this SMTP gateway in your DMZ with only SMTP traffic over port 25
accessible from the Internet and your LAN (or wherever your Exchange
server logically resides).

2) Install a 3rd party SMTP gateway, such as an email appliance
(TrendMicro, Barracuda, Ironport, FortiMail, etc.) or an standard SMTP
MTA like Postfix, qmail, or Exim.
