I agree is SHOULD let me but it gives me a 80004005 error everytime I
try and there is nothing listed in the knowledge base concerning this
error while trying to change the config server.

yes, you can set excange to use the local DC for Config, DC, and GC.

That's what I am running now
In the Directory access tap in the Server properties in system manager
the only server listed as "config" is my DC across country. It is not
listing my GC server as "config" which is right above it in the rack.
Confused? I am!

Matt,
If you have a extra server make it a DC, then in Exchange 2000 (if you
put Service Pack 2 on it) you can tell what server it should get all the
information from.
In Exchange system manger open fist store group, then rt click on the
server name, go to properties, then click on Directory access. Here you
can set what server Exchange will query for information.
This can be the new server and the data will be local, this should speed
up your performance.

Let me clarify something. I already have a GC server. I also have a
remote DC server that is connected via FR from NJ (I am in AZ). For
some reason my Exchange server sees the GC server but will not allow me
to select it for as the Enterprise Config Server under Recipient Update
Service.
I have a 4 way P3 800 server with 2Gb memory and four 36.4Gb hard-drives
on a Raid5 with only 280 mailboxes yet my Exchange/Outlook is EXTREMELY
slow!!!!!!! My RPC Operations/SEC are spiking and I can not find a way
to resolve the performace issue. After watching the network monitor for
awhile I kept seeing it wanting to communicate with the only DC that is
across country. I was hoping that making it just a simple DC without
any FSMO roles the AL performance will increase.
Thoughts.
Has anyone else had performace issues like this?? One hell of a box
with poor performace?
