Exchange has two major uses for files.

1] Transaction logs - these are written (always!) in linear sequential
order.

2] Message databases - these are accessed (always!) in a completely
random order.

Therefore, the usage patterns on the volumes containing transaction logs
and message databases are completely different. If you try to use them
both on the same physical volume - then performance is significantly
decreased.

Now, all that being said - if you currently only have a 15 GB Exchange
database, I would guess your user population is quite small. Any modern
system should be able to handle that - even in non-optimal situations -
pretty easily.

OK, my bad.

The server has 4 73 Gb drives in two raid 1 sets. The first set has the
OS and user files partitions. The second set is for Exchange.

For an Exchange server, recommendation is minimum 4 physical drives in 2
RAID1 sets.

First RAID1 set: OS partition, Page file partition, Logs partition

Second RAID1 set: Exchange DB partition, Backup partition

Yes, raid 1 = 2 physical drives.

You have a SINGLE 73 GB drive?

I will be migrating my Exchange 5.5 org to Exchange 2003 in the near
future. (Thanksgiving weekend) And am asking for disk drive partitioning
suggestions. Our current Exchange org is taking about 15 Gb of disk
space on an NT4 server. I have a 73 Gb drive that I am planning on using
for the Exchange 2003 setup. What size partitions should I build for the
migration?
