Yes there is another option but it's a costly one. 

Ontrack makes this really nice piece of software called PowerControls
which recovers mail from Exchange 5.5 all the way up to 2003. However it
costs $1500 USD to purchase. I have used this software myself for
clients of mine on 2k Exchange mail boxes and have had a lot of success.

We have a need to restore a mailbox from a tape that was made of an
Exchange server that has since been decommissioned.  Are there any
options other than using the Recovery Server method?
