Hi Don,

We were having the exact same problem, with the exception that we only run one
Exchange 2000 server.
In our case the "offending domain" maintained TWO non-connecting server MX
Here is what I did to fix it. I removed the External DNS Servers from the SMTP
Virtual Server Properties.... thus making the server look to the internal
network DNS server. I then put the External DNS Servers in the Forwarders of
our internal DNS Servers. It then would look at the secondary, etc. MX
records. We have had no problem since.

Hi I am new to Exchange 2000, perhaps there is someone out there who can
point me in the right direction.

We have 2 MS Exchange 2000 servers. They are both set-up in exactly the
same way, each has its own MX record and they both go through the same
firewalls using the same rules. They both use the same external DNS
servers. One server has no problems sending to the "offending domain"
The other server fails with a connection dropped status. The
Administrator of the other domain has admitted to having the first MX
record as a non connecting record (he says for security reasons).
However the first server still finds the secondary or tertiary MX
records and delivers the messages. The second server does not seem to
cope with this. Using the message tracker tool it appears that the
message gets as far as "SMTP:message Submitted to Categorizer" then goes
into la la land and eventually comes back with message undeliverable.

What is happening?
Where is the problem?
What mechanism does Exchange 2000 use to deduce the next valid MX record
for a domain?

Any help would be very much appreciated, thank you for your help.
