Yes, if Exchange can't access the logs it will shut down the IS.

That looks to me like your virus checking software is scanning the logs
area, which is not a good idea.

Hi,
This is a problem I am facing with an Exchange Server 5.5
installation.My IS needs to be restarted from the services.msc on
certain occassions - a senior colleague suggested that one of the
reasons is when an attachment whose size is larger than our permitted
limit arrives.He said that though a size limit is placed on attachment
sizes , this issue will happen , because as a result of a bug in
Microsoft Exchange 5.5 , this limit on attachment size is not enforced.
But somehow , I am not convinced .So I have culled out the following
from my Event Viewer's Application Log (in the same order in which they
appeared in the Event Viewer's Application Log , top to bottom) :
