Hmm.. That depends. Are these servers in the same forest? If so, then nothing is needed to make this happen. Users on Exchange2 will up whatever routing was there before and use that. If no specified route was there, then a SMTP connector would give you some control over that. A lot depends on the configuration and how you have it currently setup. For example, if Exchange 1 has a SMTP route defined to external domains, then adding a second server would just cause it to pick that up. If you left Exchange 1 in a default configuration, then it routes to the external domains anyway it can. Adding Exchange2 to that mix would result in Exchange 2 doing the same. In essence, you'd have two Exchange servers trying to find their own routes to the external domains. That's default. If you wanted both to use the same path to external domains, in this case Exchange 1, then you'd configure a SMTP connector and define Exchange 1 as the responsible MTA for that connector. If they are in different forests, then it's another matter altogether. What's the topology? -----Original Message----- From: Camey Psaromatis [mailto:CameyY@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, December 20, 2004 12:34 PM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: Connecting Exhchange servers http://www.MSExchange.org/ Thanks for the quick response. I'm moving users to a new mail server, but until the move is finished, I want those who have moved to the new server to be able to send and receive email throught the original public Exchange MTA. Exchange1 <----> Exchange2 SMTP (public) Is it best to use a smarthost setting on Exchange2's SMTP prot that points to the FQDN of Exchange1 and not use an SMTP connector at all? If so, then yes, a SMTP connector would likely be the way you'd want to do that.
