Emailing scanning and file scanning are two different animals. That's why AV companies make a server product AND an email product. Without the email portion in place, you're just asking for trouble. Since Exchange is its own db and application, there is not real way for an file-system-level scanner to protect your mail server. Perhaps I'm misreading you and you do have both pieces installed on your server. If not, go buy it yesterday. I have Trend Micro on all our boxes here and have had zero issues. I have the ServerProtect product and also their ScanMail product both loaded on the server. ServerProtect takes care of the file system; ScanMail takes care of the email. You just need to make sure like it's been stated previously that your file system AV isn't scanning Exchange db's (or any dbs for that matter). This can not only cause issues w/ Exchange but other Db applications out there can have serious problems (including but not limited to corruption) due to an outside application opening/closing/reading/writing those files. AV is one of those things that you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. :) Regards, Mike Liddekee Network Engineer Humco Holding Group, Inc. 7400 Alumax Dr. Texarkana, TX 75501 Ph: (903) 831-7808 ext 697 -----Original Message----- From: Thomas L. About 6 weeks ago or so (right around the "major security patch" from Microsoft came out) my server started overflowing with the log files and recently I have had the calendaring issue. I followed your advice when the log file issue came up and excluded from my scans all of the appropriate drives, folders, files and extensions. At that time I contacted Symantec and was told that I didn't have the "right" version of their product, and suggested I purchase the "Exchange" product. As a newly trained Sys Admin I have been taught to look for "what's changed" when I troubleshoot. Exchange is all over the documentation for my Anti-Virus and the combination of W2k/Ex2K and Norton Corp. 7.5 worked fine for over a year. My question to the group and you is "what's changed"? I hate to be paranoid or too much of a conspiracy believer, but I smell a corporate rat, that's trying to gouge me/us!!!! Opinions are appreciated. Sincerely, Tom Hollembaek GMR, Inc. 37 E.
