Backup of Exchange 5.5

I have been trying to do online backups of my Exchange 5.5 server. I tried
Lee Derbyshire's suggestion of NTbackup but the log file is always empty.
I cannot tell if it has run or not.

Is there any way of telling what is on the tape using a Windows utility?

I would appreciate any help with this problem.
