[ExchangeList] Archiving / Compression of messages in Exchange 2003

Hi:
We are currently running Exchange Server 2003 with Windows 2003 as O/S. Need
some suggestions / help with respect to archiving / compression of emails.
First things first would really like to know whether the above are possible
using the Exchange Server 2003 or native Exchange tools itself or I need to go
for some third party softwares. If yes, would appreciate some references for
the same.
# We need to archive mails (incoming / outgoing) for a period older than 1 year.
# We also need to compress the sent / received by the Exchange
