What type of client is connecting to the E2K server? Outlook or Outlook
Express? I have had the same problem with Outlook Express on a Macintosh
(which doesn't log on to the W2K network). The solution was in the
authentication of the email client. Check out article Q290808 from
Microsoft. I think it's the one that helped me out.

We have never been a relay. If this were the case, wouldn't we get the error

every time we tried to send to an earthlink address? It happened Monday
morning, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon and about two hours in the
afternoon yesterday. We have been fine all day today. I have never rebooted
or stopped/started services to cause a change. It's transient.
