and the analysis of the 1701 version of the Dictionnaire universel by Henri
Basnage de Beauval. The project is being carried out by a consortium of three
French institutions under the direction of Prof. Geoffrey Williams

The aim of BASNUM is to better assess the importance of this work for the
evolution of sciences and mentalities in the 18th century, and to contribute to
the contemporary movement for creating innovative and data-driven computational
methods for text digitization, encoding and analysis. To date, no study has
endeavoured to evaluate and to understand the extent of the transformations and
additions brought by the émigré French lawyer to the initial work by Antoine
Furetière. However, between 1690 and 1701 the dictionary triples in volume and
undergoes important qualitative changes. The working hypothesis is that, unlike
both Furetière and the members of Compagnie de Jésus involved in the conception
of Trévoux (1704), Basnage approaches dictionary writing much more as a
scientist. As a result, he produces an encyclopaedic and descriptive work,
operating also as a form of learner’s dictionary. Beyond the understanding of
the lexicographic method of Basnage, the project intends to explore the
linguistic vision within which the DU is built. It will raise the question
about how the sociological and religious identity of the author affected his
work. In this regard, dictionary writing may be seen not only as an
encyclopaedic enterprise, but also as a means to maintain the link with France,
for himself and moreover for a community keen on preserving its identity in
spite of being severed from its motherland. The project sets to test these
hypotheses and to answer these questions through a systematic, i. e. computer
assisted, reading of the text. First, this involves the preparation of the text
in an XML/TEI compliant format. In addition to manual encoding, the project
will use advanced techniques for semi-structured text acquisition, adapting the
scholarly paper parser GROBID to the digitization of a historical dictionary.
Second, once the source digitized and further corrected and marked-up, it will
be compared, using digital tools, to precedent and subsequent dictionaries, so
as to evaluate Basnage’s contribution. Third, a series of queries will be
conducted in order to extract all available information about scientific
domains and branches of arts and crafts, as seen by Basnage, as well as about
his auctorial stance. Fourth, the lexicographic corpus of the 1701 DU and
Basnage’s scientific network will be, at least partially, identified, both
through manual identification of authors quoted in the text, and through the
use of the named entity tool NERD, freely available via HUMA-NUM.
The doctoral student will explore the linguistic vision of Basnage, as
reflected in the DU. He or she will help with the ocerisation and the cleaning
of the files, then will participate to the manual encoding of the entries
during the training phase of GROBID. The main part of his/ her work will be
dedicated to the identification and the analysis of marks of subjectivity
throughout the dictionary. He or she will also actively participate to the
analysis of the encyclopaedic contribution of Basnage, through helping with the
identification of the scientific networks of the author and with the
understanding of the forms of cooperation Basnage practiced.

Previous experience in the field of digital humanities or NLP is not mandatory,
but will be taken into account when screening the applications.
You have outstanding academic results.

Le projet ANR BASNUM recrute un doctorant en humanités numériques appliquées à
la numérisation et l’analyse du Dictionnaire universel d’Antoine Furetière,
dans la version de 1701 revue, corrigée et augmentée par Henri Basnage de
Beauval. Le projet sera mener par un consortium de trois institutions sous la
direction du Prof. Geoffrey Williams <mailto:williams@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> – UMR
Litt & Arts de l’Université Grenoble Alpes, UMR LATTICE de l’Université
Sorbonne nouvelle et l’équipe Almanach de l’INRIA.
L’objectif du projet BASNUM est de faire apparaître l’importance de cet ouvrage
pour l’évolution des sciences et des mentalités au XVIIIe siècle. Le projet
vise également à contribuer au mouvement actuel de conception de méthodes
innovantes de numérisation, encodage et analyse des textes. Jusqu’à présent,
aucune étude n’a cherché à évaluer l’étendue des transformations et des ajouts
apportés par l’émigré français à l’ouvrage initial d’Antoine Furetière. Or,
entre 1690 et 1701 le volume du dictionnaire triple ; par ailleurs, il connaît
de nombreux et importants changements qualitatifs. L’hypothèse de travail est
que, à la différence de Furetière qui le précède, mais aussi des membres de la
compagnie de Jésus impliqués dans l’écriture du Trévoux (1704), Basnage conçoit
son travail dans un esprit plus scientifique. Le résultat est un ouvrage
descriptif, encyclopédique, et qui par endroits peut être vu aussi comme un
dictionnaire d’apprentissage. Au-delà de l’analyse de la méthode
lexicographique de Basnage, le projet cherche à explorer la vision linguistique
à partir de laquelle le DU est construit, et qu’il conforte en retour. Dans
quelle mesure l’identité sociale et religieuse de Basnage affecte-t-elle son
travail ? Peut-on voir dans la conception du dictionnaire non seulement une
entreprise encyclopédique d’un membre de la « république des lettres », mais
aussi un moyen de garder le lien avec la France, pour soi-même mais surtout
pour la communauté émigrée qui cherche à préserver son identité culturelle en
dépit de l’éloignement de sa patrie natale ? Le projet cherche à tester ces
hypothèses et à répondre à ces questions à travers une exploration systématique
de l’ouvrage, c’est-à-dire assistée par ordinateur. Ceci implique, en premier
lieu, la préparation du texte dans un format XML/TEI. Compte tenu du volume à
traiter, le projet aura recours à GROBID, un outil d’acquisition automatique de
texte semi-structuré, à l’amélioration duquel il contribuera en retour. Une
fois le document source numérisé, et après des travaux de nettoyage et
d’encodage supplémentaires, le DU va être comparé à des dictionnaires
antérieurs et postérieurs. En troisième lieu, une série de requêtes va être
écrite, afin d’extraire de l’information à propos des domaines scientifiques,
techniques et professionnels couverts par Basnage ; de même, ces extractions
vont permettre de mieux comprendre la position auctoriale de Basnage. Enfin, le
projet cherchera à identifier le « corpus » lexicographique de Basnage, ainsi
que les réseaux scientifiques et littéraires dans lesquels le DU s’inscrit.
Pour ce faire, le projet aura recours à NERD, un outil de reconnaissance
d’entités nommées développé par INRIA et mis à la disposition de la communauté
scientifique via HUMA-NUM.
Le doctorant aura particulièrement la tâche d’explorer la vision linguistique
de Basnage, telle que reflétée dans le DU. Il va contribuer à l’océrisation et
au nettoyage des fichiers, puis à l’encodage manuel d’une sélection d’entrées
pendant la phase d’entraînement de GROBID. La plus grande partie du travail
sera consacrée à l’identification et à l’analyse des marques de subjectivité
dans le dictionnaire. Il va également participer à l’analyse de la contribution
encyclopédique de Basnage, et à l’identification de ses réseaux scientifiques.
Profil et exigences
Master en Linguistique ou Littérature française (XVIIe – XVIIIe siècles)
Une expérience dans le domaine des humanités numériques ou TAL est un plus,
mais n’est pas obligatoire.
Excellents résultats académiques.
Intérêt pour les dictionnaires historiques, la lexicographie, l’histoire des
sciences ou la culture française des 17e et 18e siècles.
