New formula for grading schools criticized

A new formula for grading Florida schools, set for a vote Tuesday by
the state Board of Education, is facing a surge of opposition.

Parents of special needs students, advocates for students learning
English, teachers unions, superintendents from large school districts
and the Florida PTA have blasted the new formula.

Release of teacher test data in English and math is a big step forward

New Yorkers today know more about the teachers whose salaries they
pay, who spend thousands of hours in classrooms with their sons and
daughters, than they did yesterday.

This is excellent. As teachers so often say — except in this case,
where there is much caterwauling — knowledge is good.

The Daily News is among the press outlets that filed the Freedom of
Information Law court action that forced the Education Department’s
teacher ratings into public view.
