Was this tongue-in-cheek or serious? The former, I hope!
I'm still in favour of phonics **when learning**. After we see a word over 
and over again, I agree that we look at the whole pattern (and the context). 
Still, phonics gives us the ability to learn faster and the tool to tackle 
new words alone. Otherwise,without an instructor, who would be able to 
decipher a new word by him/herself? It would be akin to taking away 
someone's digital watch and giving them an analog one and, without 
instruction in telling the time, asking them to meet you at noon.
