Please check out our newsletter below which outlines our section's
accomplishments this year!

*Fall 2017 ESA Biogeosciences Section Update*

*1.    **New this year:*

A.   New Logo and Merchandise

*2.    **Student Travel Awards*

In 2017, the second year of our student travel award program, the
Biogeosciences section again made six awards ranging in amount from
$200-500 to the following students:

*Daniel Casarella* *(**Skidmore College, UG), Jennifer Cristiano (Skidmore
College, UG), Rebecca Evans* (*Washington State University), **Russell
Hedberg* *(Pennsylvania State University),** Rachael King* *(University of
Minnesota), and Brittney Monus (Arizona State University, UG). All of these
awardees helped staff our booth during the meeting, so please join the
executive committee in congratulating them for their scholarly work and
service to our section. *

*3.    **Outstanding Paper Awards*

Junior Scientist Outstanding Publication awards were initiated in 2007 to
promote young scientists and highlight outstanding work in the field. Each
year, the awards are presented to the first author of a notable paper in
the Biogeosciences that was published between January of the previous year
and May of the current year. The winner of each award receives a $250 cash
prize.  The section Executive committee would like to thank the judges that
volunteered their time to read the papers that were nominated and select
the winners.

*A.   **Elizabeth Sulzman Award*

This award recognizes research conducted while a graduate student, and
published within two years of graduation. This year’s award winner is Erin
Hanan for the paper: Hanan, Erin J., Christina Naomi Tague, and Joshua P.
Schimel. 2017. Nitrogen cycling and export in California chaparral: the
role of climate in shaping ecosystem responses to fire. *Ecological
Monographs* 87: 76–90.

*B.   **Gene Likens Award*

This award recognizes work conducted by an early career scientist (within
five years of receiving a Ph.D.) for work conducted after the completion of
graduate school. This year’s winner is Steve Powers for the paper: Powers,
S.M., T.P. Burt, N. Chan, J.J. Elser, P.M Haygarth, N.J.K. Howden, H.P.
Jarvie, H.M. Peterson, J. Shen, F. Worrall, and A.N. Sharpley.  2016.
Long-term accumulation and transport of anthropogenic phosphorus in three
river basins. *Nature Geoscience* 9: 353–356. doi:10.1038/ngeo269.

*4.    **Best Student Presentation Award*

The *New Phytologist Trust* has renewed our grant to fund this award for
the next three years (2017-2019). This cash award is in the amount of $500!
Last year’s award went to *Matthew E. Craig* from Indiana University. His
presentation was entitled "Higher carbon-to-nitrogen ratios in soils
dominated by ectomycorrhizal-associated trees do not equate to greater soil
carbon storage."

For this past meeting (2017), the New Phytologist best student presentation
award went to *Brooke Osborne* from Brown University, Her presentation was
entitled “Canopy nitrogen is correlated with litter and soil nitrogen in a
lowland tropical forest.”  We thank the judges for evaluating these and the
other awesome presentations made by our graduate students.

*5.    **Bylaws and Nominations for New Officers*

We have found are Bylaws and they are back on our webpage. Most notable is
that we are supposed to have a chairperson, a past-chairperson, and a
chairperson-elect, in addition to a secretary and webmaster. We plan to get
back on this structure over the next two years. *Please consider nominating
yourself or a colleague for the chairperson elect or secretary positions.*
We will hold elections early this fall.

*6.    **Logo Contest*

Last year the Biogeosciences section ran a contest for a new logo and the
winner was *Stephanie Freund* from the University of Nevada, Reno. She
received a $200 prize and her design is now on our merchandise for purchase
at our section booth. We thank the judges for their help in the selection
of the winner.

*7.    **We have ESA Biogeosciences merchandise for sale!*

If you did not attend the meeting this year, you missed out on our new ESA
Biogeosciences merchandise using our new logo (Cappuccino Mugs, Men’s and
Women’s Tee-shirts, and way cool hats). The profit from the sale of these
items supports our student travel awards for the annual meetings. So,
please come by our booth next year (2018) in New Orleans and purchase
merchandise for you, your family, and friends! Note our updated and stylish
booth banner and our very photogenic current and past officers!

*8.    **2017 Mixer*

We had an amazing joint mixer in Portland with the Soil Ecology Section.
Thanks to Soil Ecology Section Sara Baer for being such a great leader and
mixer coordinator! Please plan on attending the joint mixer (hopefully with
the return of the Microbial Ecology Section) next year in New Orleans; we
guarantee we will have a great time.

*9.    **Business Meeting to Debut in 2018*

In addition to the lively mixer noted above, we plan to have a business
meeting at the 2018 annual meeting in New Orleans.  Mark your calendars!

*10. **New Listserve*

We are now using a new listserve for all section announcements.  To
continue receiving announcements from the section you must add yourself
(unfortunately we cannot do it for you).  To join send an email to
