Well, it prompted me to look again at the icon image-caching code, resulting in 
a small cleanup based on a helpful gtk 2.6 function, and clarification of why 
svg icon files are not usable (here at least). The latter was fixed by 
upgrading librsvg from 2.14.x to 2.15.9.
