but I still can't see why the chain of events leading to the crash was
initiated. It should never have happened.

So, a couple of questions:

Was any item selected in the filelist when the menu was initiated?

Was the pointer-button-click 'normal' i.e. no <Shift> or <Control> key
override (i.e. for one of the sub-menus)?
