Last night was a calm, clear night perfect for listening for owls. I heard
two species and put two sound recordings into a little video to share.
I started at the 151/BRP intersection (Elk Pasture Gap) around 9pm and listened
for a couple hours. Northern Saw-whets have been reported here recently but I
did not hear one. I did hear a distant Barred Owl, and when I started to record
it, a closer Barred Owl put out a caterwaul that stunned me! I'm lucky to have
recorded it because she (presumably) did not make any other calls while I was
On the way home I stopped 1 mile closer to Asheville at the Mills River Valley
Overlook, and did hear a Northern Saw-whet Owl here. It seemed to be fairly
close to the overlook, so that might be a good place to park and listen.
