Amy C wanted to see how we take nest content photos. Here is our current
setup. An extendable painter’s pole from the big box store. My wife’s old
cracked iPhone. A device designed for cyclists to attach their phones to bike
handlebars, and in my palm, a bluetooth shutter release. Second photo, me
posing with it, as if it weren’t obvious how to use a pole :-). I just got the
bluetooth shutter release yesterday and it is well worth the $25. Prior to
this we would set the camera on video, and video the whole trip up into the
tree and then watch the video to see if we got the nest contents. Now we can
manoever the phone into position and start snapping. It’s easier to archive
photos than videos.
The tricky thing is getting the iphone camera positioned right, so you get the
nest contents and not just the near edge of the nest, which happens way too
often. A phone mount that swiveled in one more axis (so that the camera was
aimed 30 degrees away from the pole instead of right back down the pole) would
be very valuable and I think I’ll shop for a mount like that next.
Nest photo is from today, nice and sharp.
No links, because you’re better off just googling “bicycle phone mount” and
“bluetooth shutter release phone”
