Hi all,
I've updated our sampling protocol documents following discussions from our
last meeting and emails over the last month. A couple major things to note:
-As Amy mentioned, FTA card pieces and envelopes will be made available to
anyone who would like/is able to take blood samples. I've included a picture of
the card and envelope in the protocol doc.
-Than has generously agreed to house samples at his lab until they can be sent
to the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute to be shipped across the
border. I've made updates to the protocol docs to reflect this. If you are a
bander in the U.S. and have blood/feather samples, ship to Than.
-I've removed cloacal swabbing, fecal sampling, and feather mite sampling from
the banding data sheet, since I don't think anyone needs these samples at the
moment.
-I've removed the 'long tail' measurement from the banding sheet following our
discussion over the past month (birds will be in-hand for longer to get blood
samples taken etc., and no one really uses long tail measurements for anything)
-The skin lesion sampling document is still a WIP, since we've yet to have a
discussion on where to ship these samples for analysis (local
veterinarian/local lab). Collection of these samples would be more on an
opportunistic basis. I hope to focus on this document next week.
I know for many the banding season is well underway, so for those of you who
are in the field already, all but the lesion sampling doc is ready for you to
refer to. You should be equipped to take blood and feather samples once Amy
ships FTA cards/envelopes to you.
All docs are accessible here:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ngstpz9tzohjoi2/AAD-Ko-FzIdG7-iWbc8-Uqada?dl=0 ;
When you're out in the field: check your banding sheet and/or your executive
summary sheet on what samples to take, and then you can refer to whatever
sampling protocol for collection/storage/shipment details.
Cheers,
Jane

Hi all,
Amy’s been called away suddenly, so won’t be able to make the meeting
today. She was going to be leading the PHVA discussion, and I think the other
items on the agenda (sampling protocols, questionnaire [attached], and agenda
items for the annual meeting) can all be done over email, so we’d like to
postpone our meeting until the same time next week if possible (Amy will
follow-up about that).
Jane will send a follow-up email with her updates on the sampling
protocols, and if anyone has any agenda items for the AGM then please send to
Amy. I’ve attached the PHVA questionnaire that Amy circulated here - if you can
use the meeting time to complete this, that will be very helpful for our next
meeting.
Thanks!
Hazel
