The house I grew up in (built in 1977) had a wooden door with two torsion
springs.

A torsion spring techincally not a torsion spring actually it's a spiral wound spring turning a shaft.... Won't hold this door. Think how heavy a wood front door is and make it 16X7 and then figure in the weight of 6 more long rails.

My house has a non-insulated aluminum door with a single torsion
spring. I thought it would be a really noisy door opening and closing, but
I have been pleasantly surprised and have no plans to replace it. My
parents replaced their door at their new house with an insulated one
because the first door that was put up was extremely noisy.

The noise usually comes from the wheels. There are plastic ones which are really quiet but they do wear a little quicker though the savings in sound is well worth it.

With plastic wheels and a good properly mounted opener(mounted on rubber isolators) And the right kind of opener etc they can be very quiet.

My preferred type of door is a vertical lift folding door like on a hanger. That's how I'd design mine from scratch. Goes straight up and out of the way. No swinging doors to get in the way no door overhead inside to get in the way of storage/use...

I installed my garage door opener and it was surprisingly easy. It's a
Chamberlain with the Sears brand on it and the instructions are amazingly
good. They've had decades to refine them, though. Just take your time and
read the instructions before you start and it goes pretty smoothly. I
didn't need to make any trips to the hardware store after I started.

Instructions? I don't use them much. Put one or two up... I will recommend never buy a screw drive opener for a heavy door. They will be extremely noisy and will get so loud over time that you can hear the door open from anywhere in the house. When you buy a screw drive opener you get screwed.... As much as I hate screw drives they have two redeeming values. One is they have 1/2 8 two start acme thread which is good for CNC machines but too short for anything but the ZA axis and the other is they are dead simple to install. No getting the chain just right etc.

Chain drives are the best for the $ and belt drives are really quiet.

One big issue with the openers now.... They have changed the frequency that the remotes operate on.(a few years ago) The range is totally unacceptable on them now. I can stand right in front of the door and it'll often not work. The freq has changed and the wattage of the transmitter is nearly nothing. Chamberlain knows it's a problem but has stated they will not try to improve the range. There is an add on remote antenna and other items that get the antenna outside of the garage and they help allot.
