Just for your information: the big chains along Ecclesall Road have in the
past also tried to get extended opening hours, which (thankfully) was
rejected.
And whilst no-one around here (as far as I'm aware) is against Ecclesall
Road being a vibrant going-out area (on the contrary), our opposition to
late-night openings arises from our support for a genuinely mixed community
- and this includes not just late-night revellers, but also families with
young kids, working people whose employment requires them to get up early,
older people and so on... so not everybody can live with door-banging,
engine-revving and loud/shouted conversations at 2am (which invariably go
along with late opening hours)!
So what we're arguing for is
a) a balance between the needs of businesses and the needs of the
residential community around them, and
b) the opportunity for a vibrant *mixed* community living around here (not
just people who can afford late nights).
If you think that's being a spoil-sport... well, I'm sorry. But I think
it's precisely that concern for *everybody's* wellbeing, not just that of
one group, that makes so many people say No to those late-night opening
applications.

I've always found it odd that I can stay in Lost & Found across the road

2am, but can't support a local independently owned business in the same

Personally I'll be writing in support. I am seriously concerned that we're
facing an existential crisis for a number of our favourite eateries and
bars once the government ends furlough and mass redundancies sadly happen.
All bars and restaurants nationally currently have seriously restricted
numbers of customers at any one time and we have no end in sight to COVID
at this time. I just don't see how livings can be made, long term in these
circumstances.
I have no problem with a local business having a few more hours a couple
of days per weekend, in line with nearby competitors owned by large chains,
in order to keep their doors open. For me, the vibrancy of Ecclesall Road
is an important reason for living here.

close their terraces at 9.00 or 9.30 PM has been accepted by the Planning
Authority for many years and we don't think it should be changed now.
