Dear Members of ECCO
I think that the people who will be most affected are those of us who live at
the bottom of Rossington Road and on Brocco Bank. I’m remembering how it was
for these folk during lockdown when people were partying in Endcliffe Park till
late at night/early hours of the morning.
Just because it may not directly affect those of us who live on
Everton/Newington/Wiseton and the “Vale” Estate doesn’t mean that we can’t be
neighbourly and think about those who will be directly affected.
With appreciation and gratitude for everything that the members of the ECCO
committee do on our behalf.

...and if they're *officially* allowed to be open till late, it means you have
to add an extra hour (at least) to that time before customers have left
(banging car doors, revving up engines and shouting around in the process). No,
I'm not tarnishing everyone with the same brush - it only needs *one* lot like
that per night to impact negatively on neighbouring residential areas.
Plus, Nonna's really doesn't strike me as struggling for survival - they've
been ever so busy from the first day they were allowed to reopen.

I entirely agree that people should have the greatest freedom compatible with
the freedom of others. There was a time when employers were free to work little
children for sixteen hours a day. I remember when employers were free to employ
sweated women workers on finishing trousers at a penny halfpenny a pair. There
was a time when people were free to neglect sanitation so that thousands died
of preventable diseases. For years every attempt to remedy these crying evils
was blocked by the same plea of freedom for the individual. It was in fact
freedom for the rich and slavery for the poor.
Do we really want the lowest possible denominator on Ecclesall Road
If this is accepted if will not be reviewed after the pandemic is over in fact
I suspect it will open the flood gates for every bar to be open until 1pm

Nonnas have tried to get extended opening hours in the past for exactly the
same reason - to enable their business to be viable. And we fought the
application back then.
As far as I am concerned, if a business operating under current planning
restrictions cannot be viable, they should close or move. They know what the
limits are and should run their business accordingly, and should not go crying
to the authorities if they are not astute enough to make their business work.
As for the Covid-19 restrictions, everyone is in the same boat, and individual
businesses should not be asking for special considerations.
The government are pushing for relaxation of planning restrictions around new
housing, so there is unfortunately an atmosphere of businesses being willing to
exploit people and the environment for their own personal gain. If Nonnas win
this application, every single other business on Ecclesall Road will apply and
get the same.
Ecclesall Road is bad enough as it is, so we should fight to maintain the
current planning and licensing restrictions.
